Our chapter is named in honor of the patriotic service of area resident Captain John Joslin, Jr. Born in Lancaster on September 17, 1735, John Joslin, Jr. was six years old when the neighboring town of Leominster was incorporated. Always interested in military matters, he was made captain of the company in Leominster before the Revolutionary War. He defended the colony against General Burgoyne.
When Congress decided to raise a permanent army, the Town voted on March 24, 1777 to pay those who should enlist for three years. Among the first was Captain John Joslin, Jr. He saw several battles, including the Battle of Monmouth. Later in life, Captain John Joslin, Jr. was elected to nearly every office in Leominster. Married three times (Susannah Carter, Martha Wilder, Martha Phelps), he fathered thirteen children.
Captain John Joslin, Jr. died September 10, 1810, and was buried in the old Burying Ground in Leominster. His gravestone bears this inscription: "He discharged the duties of the offices which he sustained of civil, religious, and military nature, with honor and faithfulness."
Our Chapter
Martha D. (Joslin) England founded Capt. John Joslin Jr. Chapter in Leominster on November 14, 1901. In continuous operation since then, meetings are held on the first Saturday of the month at 1:30 p.m., unless otherwise noted. Members hail from the surrounding towns of Ashburnham, Bolton, Clinton, Fitchburg, Gardner, Lancaster, Lunenburg, Princeton, Sterling, and Westminster, among others.

Constitution Week Activities
Conservation Projects (encouraged among members)
A resource for DAR scholarship applications within the community
DAR Good Citizen Awards
Support of DAR Schools (most notably, the Hillside School in Marlboro
Educational endeavors of a historical nature (school projects, etc.)
Providing aid to veterans
Cooperative preservation efforts with the city of Leominster
Charitable works of a patriotic nature
Serving as a resource for genealogical information
Leominster
Leominster is a charming and typical small city located in north central Massachusetts. Situated 20 miles north of Worcester, about 50 miles west of Boston, and 20 miles south of the New Hampshire border, Leominster can be accessed via Route 2 and Route 190. Famous for its pioneering role in developing the plastics industry, the history of the region dates back to 1701 with its purchase from a Nashua Indian tribe. Many famous Americans hailed from this location, including John Chapman (better known as "Johnny Appleseed"), James Gordon Carter (Father of the Massachusetts Public School system), and United States Senator David I. Walsh (Father of our Worldwide Navy).
